Now I haven't drawn the place value chart this time. We'd have our smallest one here and our largest one here. So, here we have one, two, three, four numbers and I would like you to order them in ascending order, so that means getting larger. Six hundred seventy thousand five hundred and thirty five is greater than six hundred seventy thousand three hundred and fifty five.Īs well as comparing numbers we may also be asked to order numbers. This means our first number is larger or greater than our second number. Five hundred is more than three hundreds. So even though they are equal, all the way to our hundreds once we get here our first number is larger because there are more hundreds. When we get to our hundreds however, our first number has five hundreds, our second number only has three hundreds. They both have seven in their ten thousand so we're still equal. They both have the same hundred thousands, both have six. Again we're going to work from left to right. Our second number is six hundred and seventy thousand three hundred and fifty five. Making sure our zero goes in as a placeholder. Here we have six hundred and seventy thousand five hundred and thirty five. Use the comparison symbol less than more than or equals to correctly compare the numbers shown. So we would have our greater than symbol in the box. So this tells us that three hundred eleven thousand four hundred and one is greater is larger than three hundred and three thousand five hundred and ninety one. There are no, there are zero ten thousands in our second number three hundred three thousand five hundred and ninety one. Now here we have a single ten thousand in three hundred eleven thousand four hundred and one. Then we moved to our ten thousands, move a column to the right. So far we can't tell which number is bigger. Now when we're comparing these two numbers we need to look at our left hand side first so we have three hundred thousands in each number. We got three thousand, five hundreds, nine tens and a single one so three hundred and three thousand five hundred and ninety one. Thirty one thousand one hundred forty one and that number is much smaller than what we were actually given here so really important we use zero as a placeholder, the same goes for our second number. Now it's really important we use that zero as a placeholder because if we didn't have that zero there all our digits would be moved across one to fill the empty gap and we'd end up with three one one four one. We got zero tens and a single one the three hundred and eleven thousand four hundred and one. We've got a one thousand single thousand. We've got a one ten thousand a single ten thousand. We're gonna put three into our hundred thousands so we've got three hundred thousands. So let's make a start and let's look at this first number here. So hundreds are ten times bigger than tens because ten tens makes one hundred and this is true all the way up our place value charts. And that's because ten ones is a single ten. So my tens are ten times bigger than my ones. The column to left is always ten times bigger than the one on the right. So, for instance, our ones, tens and hundreds. To help us figure out which symbol goes in there we are going to use a place value chart and remembering back a place value chart tells us the value of each digit in a number. It's going to be a less than symbol, the greater than symbol or equal symbol. So we have two numbers here and we need to compare those two numbers to put our symbol in there. We'll be comparing and ordering numbers up to one million and we're going to be using a place value chart to help us do that.

I'll be showing you how to do this in a visual way, using a place value chart then there'll be some questions for you to have a go at as well. Here I also teach how to say a million (un million) and a billion (un millard).Hello and welcome to this video tutorial on ordering and comparing numbers up to one million. All you have to do is say the number then add the world “mille” for thousand. For the thousands it’s pretty simple too. through nine-hundred it’s pretty easy: Just say the number 1-9 then add the word “cent” for hundred.
